TALMA

Image may contain: 4 people, people standing, sky and outdoorSeamlessly blending alt, classic and art rock, London-based five-piece TALMA command a magnetic sound and presence that comes straight out of the underground scenes of London. The raw and unshackled live performances are where TALMA truly run riot. They’ve supported the likes of Queen keyboard player Spike Edney and received acclaim for their intense energy and all-out charisma from London all the way to LA, including praise from industry commentator and author Ari Herstand.

Singer Henry Adams captivates attention with a bravado and charm rarely seen among many frontmen, while the telepathic tightness of guitarists Jack Rennie, James Creed, bassist Pete Warren and drummer Jonny Harrison make TALMA a force to be reckoned with.

Where TALMA draw direct inspiration from the likes of The Smiths, The War On Drugs and The National, they also incisively employ a musical diversity and dynamic range comparable to the likes of Radiohead and Wolf Alice.

The result is a band who operate without creative constraints and who are primed to challenge the seemingly predetermined conception of modern British rock.

Image result for talma out to seaThe lead track of the second EP release, Out To Sea is a song of two halves.

TALMA drummer Johnny Harrison explains: "Many of our artistic influences write about death in their music - The Smiths, Nick Cave, Pink Floyd.

In my own writing I sought to approach the subject from a positive viewpoint, or at least a bittersweet one. Out To Sea is about being comfortable with the concept of mortality, an acceptance that can afford us a sense of opportunity in fleeting moments and a perception of fate that gives rise to purpose. The culmination of the track in the second half instrumental almost expresses the ecstasy that comes with these realisations - we can embrace the absurdity of it all.”

Names

Full ImageWhat's in a name? A set of words by which we are known, addressed or referred to. With Names the question follows their every creative move, what and who are Names?

A melancholic, electronic, piano based alt pop duo who defy easy definitions and have no intention of succumbing to the demands of pop culture.

This creative duality is keenly felt throughout Names debut single 'Backs Turned'. Ioan Hazell (vocals / piano) and Joey Robbins (drums) offer a debut single rich in mature insight, a reflection on isolation and urban heartbreak.

Musically Names follow in the footsteps of post punk pioneers Joy Division, whilst Radiohead and Nick Cave's uncompromising melodies are also inspirations.

Bad Mood

Formed in the latter part of 2015 Liverpool band Bad Mood have been working hard to release their debut single which was recorded in the city's Crash Studios.

Well, March 26th sees the release; ironically, of May 2nd which is a relatively mean and moody initiation into their work. Doom-laden vocals and menacing guitar make this a deliciously dark listen.

Accompanied by a nicely filmed and suitably tenebrous video; also shot in Crash Studios, it's got shades of Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds (no bad thing) throughout. Ralph is spinning the track on Radio KC on Sunday March 6th.

Bad Mood are premiering the single in Jacaranda, Liverpool this very evening, well worth stepping out for!

Blair Jollands

Ralph's not averse to a bit of mean and moody vocalising and he's found it in spades with the release of the four track EP Stars Will Descend by Blair Jollands.

New Zealand born and now based in London, Blair's style has been previously compared to Nick Cave or Rufus Wainright and I'm getting shades of a funky Leonard Cohen.

The EP is a precursor to Blair Jollands eagerly awaited album Half Life which is due for release later this year.

Such is the critical acclaim Blair Jollands has already recieved it's probably not that surprising that his fanbase includes Boy George and David Bowie!

Blair Jollands has had a number of successful compositions in the world of film including the Golden Globe nominated Pride and recently had work included on the highly acclaimed Sky Atlantic series Fortitude.

Lead track Stars Will Descend sees Blair Jollands doing what he does best, pulling on the listeners heartstrings with a simple melody and plaintive vocal, not surprising it's single material.

The more uplifting Carve It Up is no less listenable overlaid with some delightful sax whilst the deliciously dark and decadent My Way Home is my favourite of the four tracks. It's what every self-respecting serial killer should have on his ipod and I'll be giving it a spin on the Radio KC Indie Show this Sunday.

Blood From A Stone finishes off this quartet of almost malevolent tracks with more edgy almost dystopian musicality. It's music to drink red wine to on a stormy night with the headphones on.
