Patersani

Ralph is always on the scrounge, looking for new tunes to play on his Radio KC Indie Show, so when the Patersani single release Lost And Found was brought to his attention his interest was peaked and it's not left the turntable since.

Pounding percussion and a full-on driving guitar intro give this debut single a delightful alt-pop feel but with a decidedly rock-like foundation. 

Based in Glasgow and formed late last year around brothers Craig and Dave Paterson the band are completed by Danny Harris on drums and Colin Orr on Bass.







Their tight sound is no real surprise given that Patersani have been working with Bruce Rintoul in the studios of late with a view to taking their new material on tour in Scotland and the UK. 

They'll be kicking off the New Year headlining King Tut's on the 19th of January as part of the venue's New Year Revolution gigs.

I can't quite put my paw on who Patersani remind me of; which is a good thing, but Lost And Found has a familiar, comfortable feel with it's addictive guitar riffs and solid vocals. 

Given that they've already featured on STV Glasgow's Riverside Show as well as performing in front of packed crowds in King Tut's we can only look forward to them moving onwards and upwards through the Scottish music firmament and beyond in the very near future - whilst, as debut singles go, Lost And Found can be considered a minor triumph.

Book Group - Tantrums

It's been a hectic time in the kennel for new tunes and it was with great interest that news of the new EP by Book Group (due for release may 17th) appeared in the inbox. Ralph took a look last year when they released the excellent debut EP Homeward Sound and a review of the EP's launch party was forthcoming. Book Group are Graeme Anderson (vocal, guitar & synth), Andrew Brodie (drums), Scott Finnigan (backing vocal and bass) and Michael Morrison (guitars).




Formed in 2012, Book Group came together from the ashes of several Edinburgh bands. They inject thundering drums and feed-backing guitars into pop sensibilities, carried by frontman Graeme Anderson’s quirky, story-driven lyrics; with harmonies and humming synths underlying it all. Live, they opened Fence's inaugural (and final) Gnomegame and Aberfeldy Festival in 2013 (and received glowing reviews for their sweat-soaked appearance at Wickerman), and hosted the aforementioned and sold out release party in Pilrig St Paul's Church hall for the début EP, Homeward Sound in May of last year.




They followed that with a limited edition (blue vinyl) double A-side single on Gerry Loves Records which saw both tracks - Victory Lap/The Lowdown of a LOUD Sound - receive national radio play. Both Homeward Sound and the single ended up top in several end of year polls. 

Tantrums is the second EP and it marks a step up in the band's confidence as songwriters. Produced by Bruce Rintoul, the 4-song EP flows from fuzz-pop to howling feedback, vocoders and pounding rhythms and electronics.






 Here Is Too Near by Book Group   





Lead track on Tantrums - 'Hear Is Too Near' - is reminiscent of early Deacon Blue with shades of Prefab Sprout injected through it so I'm happy and it'll be getting a spin on Ralph's Indie Show this Sunday (27th May) on Radio KC. It's single material and demands a video to accompany it. The EP on the whole is Alt Poppier than Admiral Fallow and not as Alt Rocky as Biffy Clyro but that's no bad thing. Lyrically well crafted ('I was in the Boy's Brigade - Never ever got me laid') melodic songs that stick in your head are the order of the day. That plus their solid musicality should see them getting regular airplay by the likes of Jim Gellatly on his new XFM Scotland show.

Fatherson

Third of the Scottish bands featured this week (Tijuana Bibles on Monday and Laykiller Caterpillar on Tuesday - do pay attention) is the increasingly impressive Fatherson. With the long awaited, much vaunted album about to be released (7th April) they're embarking on a UK album release tour and only this morning have released a video for one of the new tracks - 'I Like Not Knowing'. The good news for me is I've had a listen to the album on the QT and I can assure you the hype is not without merit - the bad news for you is, the wait 'til April 7th!

In the meantime 'I Like Not Knowing' - produced by the inimitable Bruce Rintoul - has been released along with a shiny new, well crafted video that involves a lot of running, jumping and splashing for your listening and visual pleasure. It's a lyrically reflective yet musically joyful track and will be well received at the upcoming live shows.

Fatherson are a four piece based in Glasgow and formed in Kilmarnock. They have been making waves in the Scottish music scene following a string of supports with bands such as Frightened Rabbit, Panic! at the Disco, Feeder, Twin Atlantic and Idlewild.

Fatherson have released two singles. “Hometown”, through King Tuts Recordings, showcases the band’s ability to write anthemic indie songs that will be running around your head for weeks to come. 2012 saw the release of “First Born”, strengthening the band's reputation & helping to build a fanbase all over the country.





Following the inclusion of a song on BBC Radio 1's Introducing playlist, the band performed on the BBC Introducing stage at T in the Park where their set was aired on BBC2. Gaining experience through further festival appearances during the summer culminated in a trip to America for an industry showcase, laying the foundations there for the future.

They completed their year with their biggest headline tour to date packing out venues such as The Garage in Glasgow, the Liquid Rooms in Edinburgh and The Ironworks in Inverness.

In 2013, in-between recording their debut album, the band have been playing around the country including appearances at The Great Escape in Brighton,This Is Fake DIY in London, Stag & Dagger at the ABC 1 in Glasgow and the Main Stage at Rockness. Fatherson play a few selected festivals and shows throughout the summer and are currently planning a UK tour in November.
