Live Music Red Tape Lifted.....

Big news for all small venues with a capacity of under 200 like The Cavern Club people and the unsigned bands that play in them is the news that there is no longer the need for a licence to play live amplified music.

The change in law is part of a government move to free businesses from red tape, which ministers say will give them more freedom to grow.

UK Music, which represents the music industry, estimates that the Live Music Act could enable 13,000 more venues to start holding live music events.Live unamplified music can also now be played in any location under the act.

Musicians and business owners alike have welcomed the change, which will allow live music to be played between the hours of 08:00 and 23:00 although it hasn't proved popular with noise campaigners.

Lisa Lavia from the Noise Abatement Society said there will be a "dramatic rise" in noise complaints that will "set residents at odds with local businesses". However  Business Minister Michael Fallon said: "From today businesses are freed from the red tape that holds them back.

He described the previous rules that affected pub gigs and small live performances as "over-the-top bureaucracy that stifles community groups and pubs".

"We've set ourselves the challenging target of scrapping or reducing a total of 3,000 regulations. I'm determined to slim down regulation and make Britain an easier place to start and run a business," Mr Fallon added.

The change was introduced through a private member's bill, introduced by Liberal Democrat Don Foster, in order to amend some of the bureaucracy imposed on gigs by the 2003 Licensing Act.

The MP from Bath steered the bill through the House Of Commons on behalf of his Lib Dem colleague, Lord Clement Jones. The success is a relatively rare example of a House of Lords private member's bill making it into law.

After blogging The Verdict who are performing at the Hillsborough Justice Campaign London Rocks gig I thought it only fair to draw your attention to another Liverpool band on the bill, The New Caldera .  They came to my attention when I blogged the West Derby Festival back in July so I had a listen in and I put them on the 'to do' list.

'She don't like Rock n Roll' is a laid back, but catchy tune that gets the toes tapping and features some nifty guitar work.....

The New Caldera are very much a band for their local community playing,  raising money and  awareness for causes like The Liverpool Women's New Born Baby Appeal and The Clatterbridge Hospital.  They've also been favourites on the local summer festival circuit playing The Resurrection Festival, Stanley Park Festival, Wirral Festival of Firsts, Croxteth Park Festival, West Derby Festival and latterly The Mathew Street Fringe Festival in Liverpool city centre.

'When You See Yourself' has an almost late sixties West Coast US mellow feel, with more classy guitar work and gentle lyrics.

They see themselves as less of a band, more a musical collective, brewed in the back-street watering holes of Anfield.  Led by Peter Shewell and Anthony Hart the band has featured many of their like-minded friends both live and in the studio showcasing the cream of Liverpool's 'underground' music world.

They've been constantly trying to gain support and awareness for the Hillsbrough Justice Campaign with the song 'Don't Buy The Sun' and have been invited to play it live at the HJC London Rocks event at the Monto Water Rats Theatre.  I'm certain that today's news that the release of documents by the enquiry which has vindicated the fans will be proof that their song and especially the efforts of everyone involved in the campaign has played a vital part in bringing the truth to the fore.  Time for justice.....

Enough of the politics though, back to the music and what better track to listen to than 'Jezzabel'.  It's a foot tappin' head noddin' country/bloozy number that had this Jack Russell swayin' accordingly.

They won the government backed Rock The House Competition, held in the House of Commons, which is sponsored by The Cavern Club and whose patrons include rockers Cooper and Gillan after being put forward by their local MP Steve Rotherham!

Why did he put them forward I hear you ask.....well it's obvious, quality indie/pop tunes like '24 Hours'.

It's a little anthem of a 'Power Pop' tune. A crowd pleaser and a teaser for what's to come.  

'Days are Speed' has hit written all over it.  It's got an Aztec Camera feel to it, nice choppy Roddy Frame like guitar running through..... definitely one to get the joint jumping!


If you're looking for something a bit heavier then the meaty 'Something I Said' is for you.....great drums n bass running through it.....one that got this Jack Russel's head noddin'.



The Verdict style themselves as 'a big guitar, throbbing bass and pounding drums kind of band' and they're not far wrong.

The band consist of Gaz Wilcox, Josh Ferrigan and Kev McKay and given their recent success it's not surprising they have their sights set on bigger and better things for the band.

The Hillsborough Justice Campaign (HJC) is a non-profit organisation supporting the families of the 96 Liverpool fans that died on the 15th April 1989 in the Hillsborough tragedy and their continuing fight for Justice. HJC Website
