Half Formed Things

Half Formed Things have released February, the first in a planned trilogy of singles from their forthcoming debut studio album To Live in the Flicker.

February showcases a more dynamic aspect of the Edinburgh’s band’s trademark lush, harmony-driven sound, following their darkly suspenseful 2017 Half Formed Things non-album single Embers.

“The objective for this song was Colour of Spring era Talk Talk meets The Bangles’”, says drummer Stewart McLachlan , who also engineered and produced the album sessions. “February is, at its core, a pop song, but one that really drags you through the wilderness.

Image may contain: 4 people, people sitting“February has always been detatched in the set, a burst of fury among the prettier tunes.” adds pianist/vocalist Morgan Hosking. “We were keen to emphasise that dichotomy and create a record that continually changes “scenery” as it hurtles forward.”

This Half Formed Things song’s roots go back as far as 2001. “The original song was written as a coping mechanism for a past childhood trauma”, says guitarist/vocalist Matthew Bakewell.

“Overhauling and rewriting it with Half Formed Things, I realised that it was not about denying or ignoring the past, but about embracing it and ultimately gaining self-forgiveness. Sharing this experience with Nici, Morgan and Stewart has been more enriching and cathartic than I can express.”

Image may contain: 16 people, people smiling, text“Now that the line-up has expanded we were excited to experiment with the new textural elements on record as well as on stage,” adds newest member, percussionist/vocalist Nici Hosking, who makes her recorded debut with the band on February.

“It was the first track we laid down together as a band and felt like the perfect opportunity to dive into three-part vocal arrangement and layered percussion parts.”

After spending December and January recording the majority of their album, Half Formed Things will be performing a headline set at Edinburgh’s Mash House with special guest I Am Pluto on April 28th, with further tour dates and festival appearances TBA.

Coralcrown

Image may contain: textUpon settling in London, Coralcrown auteur Luis Gotor took a hiatus from music, crestfallen that his old band had finished. Eventually, the capital’s vibrant and diverse musical nightlife captivated him, and he decided to return to music as a solo artist on his own terms and with complete creative control.
Coralcrown is the result of that. It’s a vital and visionary project, establishing Luis as an ambitious musician with a gifted ear for the kind of restlessly infectious melodies that made popular music from the seventies and eighties so uplifting. Between The Lights is radio friendly and hugely addictive, you have been warned!

His technical approach is cutting edge, and the sound he’s achieved is nothing short of the slick professional indie pop production you’re likely to hear on say, a
Foals or Bombay Bicycle Club record - audacious and primed for the festival circuit.

The first Coralcrown EP Birth is the culmination of Luis's effortlessly lush rebound back into writing music, and with a live band backing him, the stage is literally and figuratively set to disseminate his canny pop hooks to anyone with a relish for melody.

Between The Lights showcases the subtlety and sensitivity in this body of work by Coralcrown. It’s a song about a shy guy fighting his own insecurities to ask a girl to dance. Unbeknownst to him, she’s fighting her own securities too.
It’s a clever and poignant meditation on the prison of our internal complexes, made into something aesthetically sublime through tactful guitar work and a mastery of vocal layering and harmony.
Brian is playing Between The Lights on the Radio KC Indie Show so tune in Sunday March 18th from 5-7pm.

Errant Boy

Image may contain: 2 people, people sitting and outdoorWe Like You is the first Errant Boy single of 2018 and a preview of their forthcoming second album, due later this year. Boasting their signature melodic guitar manoeuvres and lyrical unease, it’s a worthy follow up to last autumn’s Means track which appeared on several best of 2017 lists.

Errant Boy has a sound that's pretty unique but if you were to twist my arm for a comparison they're a cross between Jonathan Richman and a perkier version of St Helens legendary band The Bordellos who are on a quest to annoy as much of the mainstream music industry as possible.

This is Errant Boy at their off-beat best. The track is as like-able as it is addictive. Not so much lo-fi Doom Pop; more jangly-fi (yes I just made that up especially) Quirk Pop, and is the most fun I've had listening to music with my clothes on so far in 2018.

Brian will be playing the track on the Radio KC Indie Show this Sunday so tune in on rkc.noip.me Internet Radio 5-7pm.

Rosie Bans

Artboard 13-PNG.pngIf you were a fan of Sophisti-pop back in the 80's when bands ranging from Swing Out Sister and Prefab Sprout to The Blue Nile and Everything But The Girl ruled the charts, then you're going to love Identify Yourself; the debut album by young, flame-haired Glasgow songstress Rosie Bans.

The album is funded by Creative Scotland and it's ethos falls in line with that of Ralph's Life regarding mental health awareness.

Rosie Bans states - "I have a strong desire to increase awareness of mental health and write about my own experiences. The album has four key themes; relationships, where you live, mental health and bullying."

Image may contain: 1 person, smiling, standing, plant, tree, flower, outdoor and natureRosie Bans opens with Instincts, a funky pop track with drum grooves by Bren Neil (Mugenkyo Taiko Drummers), exploring the internal dialogue about not ignoring the red flags at the start of a new relationship.

The sultry Home is her love song to Scotland and has a strong folk-pop feel, lifted by the lush layers of Scots fiddler Jack Smedley (Rura).

I Won’t Fade Into The Shade has shades of Kate Bush with it's story about her being bullied in school for 'being a ginger' followed by the intoxicating Bloodline; blending the Sitar and piano, is a heartfelt ode to her Grandfather who was an immigrant from India.

Image may contain: 1 person, close-upThere are many instruments on the album but, the most impressive is the voice of Rosie Bans as it draws the listener in from first track to last before demanding you hit the replay button and listen all over again.

Not being averse to a bit of jazzy pop Ralph's playing the lead track Instincts for your listening pleasure on the Radio KC Indie Show this Sunday from 5-7pm so remember to tune in on rkc.noip.me Internet Radio.

Johnno Casson aka Snippet

PictureColchester's favourite son Johnno Casson aka Snippet is the uncrowned king of feelgood pop-esque music and his latest album Human Good isn't bucking that trend.

Johnno takes you on a journey of "people-rich" stories that encompasses a wide array of characters including fraudsters, pimps, prostitutes, drinkers, users and abuser’s and simple everyday folk just trying to make sense of this world.

Alongside love letters to England and Johnno’s home town of Colchester, Human Good is shot through with a sense of defiance and optimism that everything will work itself out and be alright in the end. In Johnno's own words it's "melodic, passionate and full of sweet surprises."

PictureFrom the off, the eponymous lead track Human Good sets an optimistic tone, with Johnno's quintessentially English vocal overlaid on a bouncy soundscape.

Snippet quickly follows that with the slightly trippy and addictive They Keep Coming before getting meaner and moodier in the shape of Time Of Our Lives.

The lead in to I Don't Need To Love You is as wistful as the title suggests before Snippet gets all sanguine with the delightful (Not) Down And Out.

Another track not to be missed is the poignant Gentle Days, whilst not forgetting the equally wistful Hurt For You. This is an album of ups and downs, but not in a bad way as Johnno Casson employs his ever clever song writing talent to tease your emotions. We don't do marks out of...but if we did...Human Good gets a 'must have' comfortable 8/10.

Joel Thomas

Joel Thomas is a twenty-two year old singer songwriter from Liverpool and he is the latest signing to Edge Hill University's in-house, indie record label.

Joel has been playing the guitar for the last seven years and writing songs for three.

Sunshine Funshine is Joel Thomas' first release on The Label Recordings. An infectious slice of Indie Pop, he says The Smiths were one of his biggest influences.

"Because of their melodic guitar work and satirical lyrics" he explains. "That’s where I got the over the top chorus 'as long as I’ve got you I don’t care if my skull caves in' but musically this song is influenced by Ty Segall with his rough around the edges kind of style."

Joel Thomas' Sunshine Funshine was released on The Label Recording's Summer Sampler and if you're looking for the perfect track to make up your summer mix-tape (do people still do that) this one's for you with it's punchy, punky guitar riffage.

Ralph gave it a spin on the Radio KC Indie Show last week and will be keeping his ears open from this talented young singer songwriter.
