Feral Five

It's hard to believe that it was as far back as 2013 when Ralph first came across Feral Five and they donated a track to the Ralph's Life CD for the mental health charity Rethink.

At that time they'd just released their debut EP Skin to great acclaim and it was the lead track that was included on the Ralph's Life CD.

Nearly four years down the line, Feral Five have produced another 'banger' of a CD and March 31st sees the official release of Man Cat Doll Machine (I'll forgive them not calling it Man Dog Doll Machine) with some splendid artwork by Tracey Moberly who's previously collaborated with Banksy and Bill Drummond.

The EP was fused together in response to an invitation to perform at the Martin Ware 'Everything You Can Imagine Is Real' Late Shift at the National Portrait Gallery in London recently.

Lead track Man Cat Doll Machine is a synth infused gem full of dynamic basslines behind Kat's soaring vocal and Ralph's got the track playlisted for the Radio KC Indie Show on April 12th.

Given that the Man Cat Doll Machine EP is full of heavy yet danceable techno pop vibes, anyone that's there on the night is in for a rare treat as Feral Five blend the best of 80's synthpop into a contemporary soundscape for the modern day listener. You know me, I don't do marks out of...but if I did?  10/10.

Sacrifice & Bliss

Infectiously catchy experimental Rock duo, Sacrifice & Bliss release their outrageously good new single Kyrie, out Friday 28th April 2017. Ralph gave it a pre-release spin on the Radio KC Indie Show last Sunday and the Electro-Rock innovators from London are set to hit the ground running this spring, touring alongside fellow Indie-Rock tastemakers Dantevilles.

No automatic alt text available.

Sacrifice & Bliss are inventive and enigmatic, with all instruments spiking excitingly throughout Kyrie providing a glorious tickle on the balls of your eardrum (yes, they exist – it’s science). This huge synth-laden Rock banger combines light and darkness to great effect with medieval & gothic influences triumphantly merged with rampantly upbeat electro synths.

Unbelievably, with such a vast array of influences from Sly and The Family Stone to Radiohead, Sacrifice & Bliss have created something truly original whilst providing a curiously fulfilling helping of familiarity.

Image may contain: one or more people, people playing musical instruments, people sitting, night and guitarKyrie is packed full of the now trademarked and contagiously addictive riffs that fans have come to expect from guitar genius John K Lucy. Adapted from a Gregorian chant and with lyrics throughout Kyrie sung in part Greek, part Italian and part English, the distinctive vocals of co-songwriter and bassist Roger Hany put him as the front-runner for your new favourite frontman with soaring highs that Matt Bellamy of Muse would be jealous of.

Image may contain: 1 person, glasses and indoorFrontman Roger Hany explains that Kyrie was written about “the giving of yourself to that which is bigger or greater than yourself”.

Capturing the attention of the masses with sold out shows supporting the likes of 90’s Britpop icons My Life Story, 60’s Rock icon Arthur Brown and Folk Rock favourite’s Blackbeard’s Tea Party, it’s no wonder the duo have already been picked up by BBC Introducing and 6 Music with previous single Hit Me achieving multiple track of the week status’ across 40+ radio stations.

They Called Him Zone

Displaying TCHZ Crow Swan Wolf cover art.jpg
It's nearly a year since Ralph played the lead track Miami from the eponymous debut EP by Bradford's dark and mysterious electro-pop outfit They Called Him Zone on his Radio KC Indie Show.

OK, OK, they're not that mysterious as I can tell you the band are - Mik Davies on Vocals, Drone and Production, Steve Maloney on Vocals, Guitar and Production plus John Bradford on Keys and percussion when playing live.

The good news is that They Called Him Zone have a mini album on the way (Out on February 20th) and as an introduction are releasing tracks Waste You and Devil Dying by way of a taster.

No automatic alt text available. What can the world expect from their latest offering I hear you ask?

Well, they describe Crow Swan Wolf as...

"haunting, atmospheric, sexy, driving, psychedelic, gothic, dark-wave/ new-wave mayhem which casts shadows and blows tobacco smoke across an amber lit dystopian skyline".

"Somewhere between a blood-thirsty vampire driving a convertible in Miami and a Berlin cabaret bar. Darker than a graveyard at midnight. Mashed up guitars, synths, electro beats and infectious melodies".

No automatic alt text available. The tracks are available from their Bandcamp page on a 'pay-as-you-like' basis and are an excellent lead into the synth infused, bass-heavy world of They Called Him Zone. Just Fall blends a bouncy electro-pop soundscape with gloomy vocal to great effect and Devil Dying is just as enticing with a mean and moody percussive backbone drawing together a slightly lighter, very radio-friendly 'Euro-Pop' track.

The Blet Project

Scotland’s four-piece electro pop outfit The Blet Project return with their third single Eight Till Ten. A light-hearted look at modern working life and the pressures it puts on relationships; set to the sounds of 90’s R&B girl groups.

The band was formed in spring 2015 by Stephen Dennis (synths/backing vocals) to create thought-composed, three-minute pop songs with socially conscious lyrics.

Joined by guitarist Gavin McDairmid, drummer Colin MacGregor and lead vocalist Maisie Hutt, the quartet recorded an eleven track concept album based on Stephen's personal experiences and reflections on the modern world.
The Blet Project released their first single Mr David Harris in February of this year, a snapshot of modern life with echoes of 90's anthems. Needless to say Ralph gave it a spin on his Radio KC Indie Show.

Second single The Anthem, released in June this year recieved numerous plays from Radio KC and other internet shows whilst online blog The Local Music Scene highlighted the - "incredibly poignant writing; tackling the themes of self-righteous attitudes towards politics." and heralded the band as - "one of the country's most unparalleled electronic acts at the moment."

The Blet Project has performed regularly  since November 2015 supporting Kirsten Adamson and Errant Boy album launches, before supporting The Mirror Trap in May 2016 and they will release their Debut Album Now Live in November.

HICARI

A young Liverpool band catching the imagination right now is HICARI (which means 'Light' in Japanese) the multi-cultural 5-piece synth-pop band who are based in Liverpool and influenced by the likes of CHVRCHES, The 1975 and St Lucia.

Whilst HICARI also lean heavily on 80's electro influences as a foundation for their bouncy, synthy sound they're very much of the moment and that's evident in their debut release Catch Fire which is due for release in early August. Needless to say Ralph will be giving it a spin on the Radio KC Indie Show, so listen in on Sunday 17th of July and check it out.

HICARI features the combined musical talents of Shayaan Oshidar (Lead Vocal), Ryan Bickley (Lead Vocal & Keyboard), Tatsuhiko Saiki (Guitar & Keyboard), Erlend Hellevik Bass) and William Brown (Drums). You can catch these bright young things live at the Liverpool International Mersey Festival on July 24th.

With Catch Fire as a strong pop-esque debut, it'll be interesting to see how they develop their sound in the months to come, maybe steering more away from the 'light' and more interestingly, exploring their darker side. In the meantime check out Consumed.

Roman Nose

The last time Ralph checked out Roman Nose and gave them a spin on the Radio KC Indie Show was back when they did a collaboration with SAMA Best Electro winner Plum. They've been quiet of late, but I can assure you they're back with a bang in the form of the excellent new Jacked Up On Mercy EP to be released on Monday 28th March. The EP will be out on the band's own label Badly Built Records and will be available as a download.

It kicks off with the hugely atmospheric and massively addictive Bloodstains which will be getting a spin on Ralph's Indie Show Sunday 3rd April.

The year and a half hiatus Roman Nose have had has paid off big time as they've come back with a more egalitarian sound whilst holding firm to their full-on, bass-rich and deliciously dark electro roots.

Agoraphobic is a burgeoning beast of a track which should prove to be an absolute favourite live on their up-coming UK and European tour. Third track in Black Pope is probably as 'commercial' as Roman Nose are ever likely to get.

It's lighter almost synth-popesque to kick off with before getting bass-heavy and will probably prove to be the most radio-friendly track on the EP.

Final track Solid Gold is exactly that as it aggressively attacks your aural synapses with the musical equivelant of a baseball bat. Performed live in the usual Roman Nose style it'll be a killer and if you're at Brew At The Bog in Inverness on June 4th, you'll get a chance to see and hear them in the flesh.
