Bugeye

Having made a splash in 2016 and 2017 with airplay from luminaries such as BBC 6 Music, Steve Lamacq and rave reviews from the likes of God Is In The TV, female fronted, disco-punk band, Bugeye, return with their new single, I’m Not the One and a UK tour with sold out shows.  

Taking obvious inspiration from early pop punk bands such as, Siouxsie and the Banshees and Altered Images with a visual nod to David Lynch and punch-drunk productions, I’m Not The One sees the band take on a slightly darker pop approach than previous offerings, with a video production debut from front women, Angela Martin as the music video director and producer.

Bugeye sound like the bastard child of Ian McCulloch and P J Harvey with this single release by their prodigy seeing them as proud parents with their love-child Bugeye getting top marks for their GCE A level Music Module with I'm Not The One. 

OK, OK that's as surreal a comparison as I can stretch to; but it's as big a compliment as I can pay.

"When dreams in the waking world don’t come true, we expect escapism in our dreams at night, but often receive the opposite which this song and video explore. It's a piece about isolation, about an inner pleading for everything to be OK in the morning, but instead we’re plagued with nightmares.  The lyrics repeat to represent the continued struggle of how we are all waiting for something, mostly an un-articulated something and that we, as humans, can only have respite for a fleeting moment."  

Written by Bugeye front woman, Angela Martin, the song revisits, on a more personal note, taking care of her Mother in her final weeks of life in 2013 where diary notes that later influence the song state; 

"I’m not the one that saves the day, I’m not the smart one that thinks of a cure, but maybe tonight I’ll think of something to ease the coming days to give you peace."

SHEAFS

SHEAFS are a five-piece indie rock band from Sheffield, which formed in the later end of 2015 comprise Lawrence Feenstra (lead vocals), Chris Goodacre (guitar/backing vocals), Charles Mellor (guitar), Callum Wright (bass/backing vocals), Charlie Eastap (drums).

Following on from the legacy of breakthrough single, This Is Not A Protest, new track, Shock Machine is a bold step up in both power of performance and size of hooks used.




Working with producer Thomas Mitchener (Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes) Shock Machine showcases a harder, faster side to the band yet still gives the listener a riotous sing along chorus and a break down to end all breakdown. 

As with the previous release, be afraid, be very afraid, this song will get stuck in your head.

SHEAFS live sound has earned them a consistent place in This Feeling tour book as well as slots on the Isle of Wight, Reading Festival bills and their largest show to date in front of a 2000 strong crowd at Y Not Festival. SHEAFS debut headline tour in support of Shock Machine runs across the UK this February and March.

SHEAFS are another band high on our 'ones to watch' list and Brian's giving Shock Machine a spin a week on Sunday's Radio KC Indie Show so tune in from 5-7pm GMT on the 11th of February. They're going to be mahoosive!!!

The Pitchforks

Welsh upstarts The Pitchforks are set to bring in the New Year with their newest single Afflictions set for radio impact early next year.

The Pitchforks are a four-piece indie rock group from the Rhondda Valleys consisting of William on vocals, Ethan on guitar, Alex on drums, and Callum on bass. Their first single, Headlock was released in 2016 and the band were subsequently chosen as one of ten bands from South Wales to be coached and developed as part of the Forté Project 2017.

Afflictions was originally released in the summer of 2017 to much regional acclaim. Seeing how well the track was received, the quartet decided to push their music farther afield and are looking for the single to be at the forefront as they steamroll into 2018.

High octane music and frenetic vocals aplenty, ‘Afflictions’ is strong offering from the Welsh upstarts - making a racket you wouldn’t expect from such a young band. Speaking of the track, the band said...

“The lyrics were inspired by a friend’s story about a night at a pub where he decided not to pursue his affection for a girl he was speaking to because she was quite intoxicated.“

The Pitchforks have gigged extensively around South Wales and the Midlands, having played at length in Cardiff, Pontypridd and Merthyr Tydfil, as well as Bristol and Gloucester. Recently, they have played at SŴN festival, have put on numerous sell-out shows around Pontypridd and Cardiff, and have supported Pretty Vicious on their recent tour.

Paves

London four-piece PAVES are set to release their new single Baby via the reformed This Feeling Records, digitally as of now and on limited edition 7” vinyl on November 17th.

BABY is an upbeat, ready made guitar classic that wouldn’t be out of place in a feel good, Hollywood rock n roll movie. Speaking on the track, the band said, "Baby went down a blast all summer. It stood out at every festival we performed at, as the track punters got into the most. It's got that summer vibe, so we only felt it natural to release it with This Feeling who have supported big time from day one."

Brighton's SONS release Zealot is arguably their biggest, most mainstream track to date.

First two Singles, Reptiles and A Love Song? have both done exceptionally well with everyone from Radio X to BBC Intro and of course Ralph on Radio KC heaping praise plus repeat spins on brothers Lee and Nick.

Zealot is hailed by SONS as "a song for the times, a scream to engage with the desire for change. A potent and powerful commercial blast that hits your heart and your head with SONS typical uncompromising venom."

Do we like it, yes we do. It's a banger and we'll play it on Ralph's Indie Show, yes we will. Tune in to Radio KC on Sunday 9th of July from 5-7pm when we're giving it a spin.

In times of political uncertainty, the new single is the band’s stand up, fight back anthem. Speaking on the track, SONS said, "The song is about rising up, using your voice to let the powers that be know you won't just take it.

Push them, shout at them, whatever you know is right don't give up until you're heard. It isn't easy but until we push for the change then nothing will change".

Recently, the band had wildly popular shows at Camden Rocks festival and The Great Escape, as well as a number of gigs across the UK. With more gigs lined up over the coming months, SONS is a name to keep an eye on for the remainder of 2017 and beyond.

Guide Dog

With a name like Guide Dog, how could Ralph resist checking out their first single I Am The Daddy which is the debut release from their Lovely Domestic Bliss album. The tale (or should that be tail) of Guide Dog is many-fold and intriguing and unfolds thus...

They introduce themselves as "a group of wankers who can't sing and can't play our instruments" which is a bit harsh, as they can obviously do the latter.

Guide Dog are Pete Roberts (vocal/guitar), John Maloney (drums) and Ian Russell (bass). 


Pete and John met in school where they made up half of Robots In The Sky who released a red vinyl double A side single back in 1999 via now defunct Complete Control Records.

Following that they released their first LP as Tetra Splendour on EMI no less at which point Ian Russell joined and the 5-piece People In Planes was formed as they joined New York based label Wind Up Records.

Not all went to plan as a third Wind Up Records release was aborted and Pete move to London where he was involved in forming the first incarnation of Cold Specks, the brainchild of Ladan Hussein and Jim  Anderson. Two years of touring and recording followed during which time the soundscape of Guide Dog was formed.

On returning to Wales after quitting touring to start a family, Pete teamed up with John to flesh out some of the Guide Dog songs into a raw 2-piece garage rock sound with a loop pedal giving a third element to their sound and the arrival of the afore-mentioned Ian Russell bolstering the line-up.

Now we see Guide Dog attacking with a three-pronged synth infused grunginess which is made flesh in the form of their Lovely Domestic Bliss album which was produced by long term collaborator Dan Austin and recorded in three days at Rockfield Studios. It's released on Pete's own label, Hi-Vis Records digitally via all the usual download suspects and on lovely 12" vinyl via their Bandcamp account on July 7th.

The Jackobins

After a very successful 2016 playing dozens of festivals such as Sound City, Y Not Festival, Dot to Dot etc. and a rather drastic lineup change, fast rising Scouse act The Jackobins are back with an anthemic new single called Nightfire.

Needless to say Ralph will be giving the track a spin on the Radio KC Indie Show and that will be coming up on May 14th from 5-7pm.

Nightfire might not be as straightforward as the The Jackobins previous songs, yet it is their most enticing one to date. It shows a band that has honed their skill set over the past couple of years and managed to develop their sound with every release.

"Nightfire's concept arises from the idea that when it comes to inner struggle we should open up, rather than let pride act as a vice. 

Sometimes our demons are extremely close to consuming ones identity and too compelling to fight on our own. It's a song reminding us that we shouldn't forget that even tho at times it might seem so, we're never alone."
