False Advertising

If you've been following Ralph these last three years you'll know he's been a fan of Scottish band Vukovi as they've slowly but surely pushed their way to the forefront of the UK Indie scene.

Well Ralph's tipping Manchester band False Advertising who have a similar feel to do exactly the same as they release their eponymous debut album.

It's brash, grungy, in your face, powerful, angsty and well crafted. From the first jangly chords of Breaker to the climax of the burgeoning Something Better they bring a power and intensity to the listener.

Whilst Jen's on-stage presence may not match the intensity of Vukovi's Janine Shilstone (few can) her vocal is no less impressive and just as addictive.

She's ably backed by the musicality of her cohorts especially on the pacy Dozer which is being released by False Advertising as a single this week.

Describing themselves as 'raw, gritty, sassy and ambitious', False Advertising release their self-titled debut on the 4th of September. They describe it as - 'an audaciously loud album loaded with dirty riffs, oozing grunge from every pore and crackling with an electrifying fuzz primed to set your hair on end'.

Having spent years behind the scenes working with a rich array of talent from the Northwest and beyond, the band have been absorbing the industry from the inside, biding their time and standing poised ready to strike the city with a very different type of rock’n’roll than it has become accustomed to.

At False Advertising’s core runs an integral songwriting relationship between vocalists Jen Hingley and Chris Warr that sparks the band’s creativity and surges their will power. Friends for years, the pair bonded through playing separately, then together on Manchester’s open mic circuit.

Jen found her songwriting confidence in mid 2013, which marked the start of what would eventually become False Advertising. Fuzzy demos recorded in her studio flat sent back and forth to Chris began to establish a creative partnership fuelling a prolific output from both.

Alternating guitar and drumming duties and switching their line-up on a song-by-song basis, the duality of Hingley and Warr breeds a dynamic versatility that pronounces itself in the vibrant songcraft on the album from its bristling beginnings to its seismic finale.

Over the years, the pair have garnered experience from all facets of the industry they wish to conquer. Warr as a producer (The Orielles), Hingley as a digital designer (Royal Blood, Rolling Stones, The Clash). The fusion of this creative experience has provided False Advertising with enviable DIY credentials.

Bloodlines

Displaying luv.jpg
Now it's no secret that Ralph is a big fan of Ayrshire's Vukovi so it's no surprise his ears pricked up when he heard the new single Cathedral by Glasgow based (formerly from Fort William) band Bloodlines from their recently released debut EP Love The Taste. It's accompanied by an atmospheric video, of which more later.

They've also featured recently on the STV Riverside Show which introduces up and coming Scottish musical gems to great critical acclaim and it was a fine and dandy indication of their excellent live presence prior to their King Tuts gig on July 28th.

Like Vukovi they're producing vibrant, surging guitar infused anthems, five of which Bloodlines have packed into Love The Taste and all of which are likely to be favourites when performed live.

The good news is Bloodlines are playing Belladrum Festival this year as are Vukovi, go check them out if you're lucky enough (sold out on weekend tickets) to have a ticket for the weekend.

Regarding the aforementioned Cathedral video, it was filmed for Bloodlines by Keep The Change Productions at Glasgow's marvellous Oran Mor venue. It's a simple, clean and well crafted affair in a venue that mirrors the powerful, anthemic nature of the track. Ralph's giving Love The Taste a spin on Radio KC next Sunday.

Diamond and Anchor Clothing Company

Now every aspiring rock band needs to have a sharp image and have somewhere to sell their music and merchandise.  Well they need look no further than Diamond and Anchor Clothing Company who are an independent clothing label which rose like a phoenix from the flames of Ribcage Clothing.

They aim to provide their customers with clean, interesting and thought provoking designs on each and every one of their garments.  By fusing together a love of street and tattoo art, music from indie to hardcore metal and punk, they are trying to create something a bit different.  Something accessible for everyone and have some fun in the process.  Not only are they selling their own garments that they sell bands music too, available online.

Now as a Jack Russell I'm inquisitive by nature so Ralph had a Q & A with Gary Cairns Diamond And Anchor supremo.....

Ralph: What're your aspirations for the brand?

Gary: "Diamond and Anchor has always been about a long term vision rather than a clothing brand to me. I guess I used the clothing aspect and my love of design/art based projects in order to connect with like minded people, people who share my love for music.

Ralph: How has the growth of Diamond and Anchor taken place?

Gary: There have been a few people who have been instrumental in helping us grow and build a core network of trusted collaborators, such as (as an example..there are more but often remember later)The Recovery!, Crusades, Vukovi, Cold War Legacy Records, Overlook Records, Struggletown Records and many friends and family.

Ralph: And your long term aim?

Gary: The aim is simple, to bring as many people together who might not otherwise do so. Indie labels, bands, clothing, film/video makers. We will continue to grow this year on the clothing front as a lot of the production will be coming in-house, allowing for the release of many more designs and garments than we have been able to do before.

Ralph: Anything else planned?

Gary: On top of this add band merchandise, more indie labels added to our distribution section, tours, potential records releases, live shows, an unsigned festival, a youtube channel with live shows and a few things that need to be kept secret right now and 2013 is shaping up to be a MONSTER!!

I hope there is both the time AND energy to fit it all in. Lets crack on and do it!

So if you're in a band, follow a band or just want to look good.....check out the Diamond and Anchor Website and support Indie.....you know it makes sense!

Go on treat yourself.....
