What do you get when you mix Talking Heads 'Psycho Killer' with Dr Feelgood's 'Roxette' and chuck in a Blockheads-esque vocal? The intro to Southend on Sea outfit Eight Rounds Rapid track 'My Mate' which was the first track of theirs I'd heard and it got me hooked.
So it was with some interest that news came into the kennel they're releasing a new single and vinyl debut and it's a limited edition 7" vinyl release (500 copies) - and the only format that 'Writeabout' will ever be available on. The flip side Steve is a crowd pleaser and fan favourite.
It's a menacing rock 'n' rolla floor filler in the same vein as The Damned or the aforementioned Feelgoods (Eight Rounds Rapid supported legendary Wilko Johnson on his farewell tour) coming at you full on with post-punk ferocity. It's just plain nasty!
With no small amount of accolades and plays from the likes of 6 Music's Mark Radcliffe, Gideon Coe and Steve Lamacq. BBC Radio London's Gary Crowley and Podrophenia on whose label they've now signed and released the single. Looks like we'll have to give them a spin on Ralph's Radio KC Indie Show.
Dostoyevsky by Eight Rounds Rapid
Eight Rounds Rapid are - Jules Cooper on Bass, Simon Johnson (yup son of Wilko) on Guitar, Lee Watkins on Drums and front man David Alexander on Vocals.
One of the best (and funniest) music videos I've watched of late is the accompaniment to their track 'Channel Swimmer'. Enjoy!
