John Otway - The Movie

Infamously self-styled as Rock 'n' Roll's greatest failure John Otway celebrated his 60th birthday by releasing a fan funded feature film of his 'rise' to fame.  I've been a fan since seeing that ill-fated performance on The Old Grey Whistle Test with Wild Willy Barrett that all too briefly thrust him into the limelight, so was delighted to hear that he'd been able to bring his story to the big screen.

It's thanks then to Euan Weddell of Edinburgh band Little Love and the Friendly Vibes that I bring you a review of the film from the Cameo Cinema on the 2nd September which was attended by the great man himself.

John Otway The Movie - It's 'Really Really' good!

When I found out that cult rock n roll legend John Otway had made a movie I was super excited and simply had to see it. Upon arriving at Edinburgh's Cameo Cinema. I was delighted to see the legend himself welcoming the audience into the theatre. He lept onto the stage and introduced his film to a very warm applause by Otway fans both young and old. The movie was filled with sharp witty humour throughout and featured interviews with Otway, his friends, relatives and fans alike.

The movie documents his rise to fame via his infamous début appearance on the legendary Old Grey Whistle Test in 1977 and the five album deal with Polydor Records that followed.  It then  goes on a journey through his descent into the musical wilderness and the fan led battle to make his 2002 single 'Bunsen Burner' a top ten hit in the UK charts.

John Otway at the Prince of Wales, Stow MariesThe film is very detailed and reveals the extent of Otway's enthusiasm and determination to be a success.  It's also very honest, heart felt and perfectly captures the vibe and 'spirit' of the punk rock era. Throughout the screening the audience would often laugh and cheer at Otway's many triumphs and follys. Otway was equally charming and endearing during the Q and A session that followed.

He may be known as rock n roll's greatest failure, but on the evidence displayed throughout the movie – he sure knows how to fail in style.

Many thanks to Euan for the review and you can check out his band Little Love and the Friendly Vibes by clicking on their name.

They're a three piece fun pop band from Edinburgh. Formed in the summer of 2011 after Euan (Little Love) got jamming with Graham at a house party. Since then the band has gone through various line up changes in a search to find a sound that mixes comedy and punk. Quite possibly the very first band to be referred to as Fun Pop, they write songs with catchy melodies, quirky guitar hooks, focusing on lighthearted and endearing songs about being a shy boy trying to find his way in the big wide world. They're currently working on their second EP and playing gigs throughout and hope to see you on the dance floor soon.

In May they took the movie to the Cannes Film Festival. With an army of fans armed with flicker books and face masks, John was determined to make an impact and the 'March of the 100 Otways' was a complete success.

As well as hosting a screening at the Olympia Cinema on the Rue d'Antibes, the Big Band also performed at Morrison's Irish Pub on the Saturday night. Despite torrential rain on the Saturday, the spirits of John Otway and his entourage were not dampened as they took Cannes by storm.

He's a fascinating, driven, very funny and infectious man - hopefully he's still catching and he's an example to young up and coming bands and artists of how to interact with fans in order to maintain a level of success through hard work and not relying on a 'lucky break'.

What John Otway will get up to for his 70th birthday gawd only knows - but I do know I'm looking forward to it!

The Mutineers

MUTINEERS - TELL ME WHY

Ralph briefly had a look at The Mutineers back in May of last year, but after their first album things went fairly quiet due to personal projects (bassist Iwan Gronow playing for Johnny Marr for instance) and a self imposed 'hiatus'.  The good news is, they're back with a vengeance.

With the release of the new single 'Tell Me Why' and a mini-tour planned for October/November, The Mutineers mighty music machine is back on the road.

The single stays true to The Mutineers strong lyric writing ability and with a haunting vocal and musicality it's guaranteed to be a 'Muts' favourite as well as garnering them popularity with the wider Indie world. Let's hope this sees them focus on the band as a unit and with stability find a greater degree of success.  Current line up of the band is Nicholas James Mallins, Michael Reed, Iwan Gronow, Charles Salt and Thomas Twemlow.

They've an impressive back catalogue of support appearances with the likes of The View, New Order and Pete Doherty.  Whilst having a reputation for selling out their own home ground gigs it's good to see the mini-tour taking in four major cities country-wide, The Mutineers are taking their music to the masses and they'll be playing tracks from the critically acclaimed 'Friends, Lovers, Rivals' album alongside new tracks including the single 'Tell Me Why'.

Tell Me Why mini-tour dates.....

Warrington - Friars Court - 12th October

Manchester - Sound Control - 17th October

London - Rattlesnake - 18th October

Glasgow - Pivo Pivo - 2nd November

Leeds -  Cockpit - 16th November

Release date - Monday 23rd September - available via itunes - on mobile phones by texting "track TELLMEWHY" (mp3 link) or "track TELLMEWHY m" (direct to phone download) to 80818.

A New Band A Day

Joe SparrowIt's not often I consider blogging a blogger (OK, OK - never) but when I got news that Ask Me PR's Joe Sparrow aka A New Band A Day music blogger had been nominated for an AIM Award as 'Indie Champion' I decided to put paw to 'puter and share the news.

Ask Me PR were hugely excited to let me know that he'd been nominated for a highly prestigious AIM Award in the 'Indie Champion' category – alongside music industry luminaries like Lauren Laverne, John Kennedy and Gilles Peterson!

Joe’s been given a well-deserved nod as recognition for his long-standing devotion to unearthing and showcasing new music on his blog A New Band A Day. The blog's been running for over five years; catching the attention of the music industry by showcasing well over a thousand brand-new, unusual and very independent bands culled from the less-frequented corners of the internet.

Whilst some of the bands have gone on to huge success (he wrote about the then-fledgling Rizzle Kicks when they were still at college), most stay relatively unknown: but Joe says he’s happy with this – and that it’s kind of the point.

“I started A New Band A Day because I missed the rough-round-the-edge songs that I only really used to hear on John Peel’s show… the ones where you could hear the tape hiss and the squeak of the guitarist’s chair; or some obscure deep house track from Paraguay.
“So I set about finding them for myself and sharing them online… I never wanted to find the next big thing (and I didn’t either) and I never really thought about where doing this might take me!
“However, I’ve done things I never thought would do as a result – I lived in NYC for a few months, popped up on BBC 6 Music, experienced the madness of SXSW – but most importantly I have met so many fabulous people who I now count as best friends.
“In five years, I’ve dug up so many bands that thinking about it makes me feel a bit sick – but I can remember all of them, even if all the names are starting to blur into one (possibly vowel-less) mega-band-name now!”

Here's today's A New Band A Day top story by way of a tribute to Joe...go follow him!

Koloto: In The Chromo-zoneHere’s something dreadful: I listened to Koloto‘s music, liked it; and then saw that it was made by a woman, and then I made a judgement.
I couldn’t even help it. It wasn’t a negative judgement, just that I suddenly looked at the music in a whole new way, merely because I found out that this producer of electronic music, unusually, was not a man.
Sigh.
But just to clarify: there is nothing ‘female’ aboutKill Screen, just as there is nothing ‘masculine’ about, say, Underworld’s Skyscraper, I Love You. (Well, unless you subscribe to the …

Mothers Finest

Given Ralph's love of all things Indie and interest in Crowd Funding projects, his attention was grabbed when he heard legendary US funksters Mother's Finest were eschewing record companies and self-financing their first release in 10 years using Kickstarter, effectively making their fans their record company!

In-keeping with Kickstarter campaigns once you make your contribution, you get exclusive access to everything (depending on your contribution) that goes on behind-the-scenes – hear the actual song demos, watch videos of the live recording sessions, see fun photos, and get updates on how the process is going.

You will see how it all happens, from the very beginning to the very end. Mother's Finest offer incentives like rarely seen video, private conversations with the band, backstage access, personal items, and lots of other unique creations.

The group has created a sound they describe as a fusion of Funk, Rock, Gospel, R&B Metal and Jazz, taken directly from the street to the stage to the studio, that is Afro-Euro Mosaic Soulful and Electric, transcending musical division, and negative stereotyping.

Back in the day, this kind of fusion music was rare to say the least, but the versatility and originality of Mother's Finest, brought down many barriers.  Mother's Finest is Joyce Kennedy, Glenn Murdock, lead vocals, Jerry "Wyzard" Seay, Bass, Gary "Mo" Moore, lead guitar, John Hayes, lead guitar, Dion Murdock, drummer.

Known internationally, they are incomparable and unique in their ability to bring it in concert and now after several year's quiet, they're still one of the best live bands anywhere in the world.

Take this unique chance to get involved with the band, become part of their story and in the process claim your reward by pledging to help them produce the album and spread their infectious funk worldwide.

Born Thief

Having played the soon to be released Born Thief  single 'An Inch Of Doubt' on Ralph's Radio KC Indie Show it seemed like the ideal time to take a closer look at the group who have a similar vibe to Liverpool's Tea Street Band.

Born Thief are - Jake McGrath (vocals), Sam Wilson (Guitar), Greg Jones (Bass), Luke Haran (Guitar) and John Fitzpatrick (Drums) who formed recently from the ashes of Yorkshire band Sharp Darts.

From their first live performance in May 2013 with Reverend & The Makers (who recently signed with Alan McGee's new record label 359 Music) and The Sunshine Underground, quickly followed by shows with The Hoosiers and ‘NME tipped’ Dexters, Born Thief have gone from strength to strength in their first six months as a band and have played Bingley Music Festival headlined by none other than Nile Rodgers and Chic who've been 2013 festival favourites.

Born Thief will be digitally releasing their debut single ‘An Inch of Doubt’ on Sept 9th with an official launch night at the 360 Club. On the night you'll be able to purchase a limited edition physical version of the track.  It's a fresh take on a late 80's stylee disco floor filler, with the choppy guitar and smooth vocal - it's musical niceness that's best listened to on the beach in Ibiza before hitting a foam party - more tracks soon please!

The video for 'An Inch Of Doubt' is available to stream on YouTube and gigs on the horizon are.....
